Cocoa and Conservation Second Saturdays Winter Hiking Series: Bark and Buds
Sat, Jan 9 · 10:00 AM Rust Nature Sanctuary
Join Kelly Roach, outdoor educator and conservation advocate, for this monthly opportunity presented by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy to explore the hidden ecological wonders of the season right here in Loudoun. This month, we’ll focus on winter native tree identification. The woods at Rust Sanctuary feature beautiful stands of mature oaks, hickories, and beeches, alongside a vibrant understory of native dogwoods and American hollies. The stark, bare hardwood canopy allows us to get close to tree trunks to touch unique bark patterns and inspect low-hanging terminal buds. We provide the warm cocoa, you bring your favorite reusable mug! Each themed walk is a stand-alone event; come to one or join us for the whole series to watch the seasonal shift firsthand. Dress for the elements and wear sturdy footwear. Family-friendly. Registration required 48 hours in advance: Sign Up Online.
