St. Francis of Assisi and the Nativity Scene at Greccio
Tue, Dec 15 · 6:30 PM Northeast Neighborhood Library
Join Br. Thomas Piolata , O.F.M. Cap., Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at The Catholic University of America for our next "Faith in Focus" talk. The tradition of having nativity scenes is common practice among many Christians. The roots of this devotion go back to the 13th century saint, Francis of Assisi. Yet, rather than setting up some figurines, in 1223 Francis put together a "living" nativity scene in the town of Greccio. Why did he do this? What does it reveal about Francis' own lived experience and understanding of Christian life and practice? In this talk, we'll "dive" into this episode of Francis' life and explore, among other things, Francis' "incarnational" faith and the role of "memory" in his own spiritual life. This program celebrates the Franciscan Jubiliee highlighting the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. Registration is recommended.
