St. Martin’s Day Goose Dinner (Martinsgans)
Wed, Nov 11 · 5:00 PM Cafe Berlin · Capitol Hill
On 11 November, Germany eats goose. Martinstag (St. Martin’s Day) marks the end of the harvest and the start of the long run-up to Christmas. Children walk the streets with paper lanterns singing Martinslieder, and families sit down to Martinsgans: roast goose with red cabbage and dumplings. The legend goes that Martin, a Roman soldier turned monk, hid in a goose pen to avoid being made Bishop of Tours, and the geese gave him away with their honking. The geese have been paying for it ever since. For one night our German chefs are cooking it the way they grew up eating it. Martinsgans, $80 per person plus tax: roast goose with Rotkohl (braised red cabbage), Böhmischer Knödel (Bohemian bread dumpling), baked marzipan apple and candied chestnuts. Start with something from our menu, and save room for dessert. Reservations required. Please book by Friday, November 6th to ensure your meal. We order our geese for the number of guests booked. A credit card is required to confirm your table. Gratuity is not included.
