Wed, Oct 14 · 7:00 PM Hill Center DC · Eastern Market
Hill Center is pleased to partner with Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival to present filmmaker Florence Tran’s new film about the extraordinary rise and eventual collapse of democracy in ancient Greece. Arkhaios is an ancient Greek word that means ” primordial,” or “from the beginning.” Athens: Birth of Democracy takes viewers to ancient Greece, where citizens seized power, challenging kings and tyrants to create democracy. Through discoveries, reenactments, and expert insight, the film reveals how democracy emerged from conflict and innovation, reminding us that this fragile system remains one of humanity’s most radical ideas. Exploring themes that remain relevant today, the film traces the extraordinary rise and eventual collapse of one of history’s most original political ideas. From a political murder that ignited demands for popular rule, to Cleisthenes’ groundbreaking reforms, this is the story of how democracy was born—and constantly tested. But this is no simple origin story. The film also confronts the system’s contradictions: slavery, exclusion, and imperial ambition—forces that sat beneath its celebrated ideals. As internal dissent grows, philosophers challenge its foundations and power shifts across the ancient world, Athens’ experiment begins to unravel in the shadow of rising empires, including Alexander the Great. https://www.hillcenterdc.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/athens_birth_of_democracy_-_trailer_-_english_-_texted_1080p-540p.mp4 Florence Tran has filmed and directed several documentaries exploring different subjects: research in neuroscience, environmental issues, animal perception, a sacred pilgrimage in Tibet, the turmoils of the Egyptian revolution and… the mysteries of the Great Pyramid.
