Ukraine–Hungary Relations: A New Chapter?
Wed, Oct 28 · 4:00 PM Elliott School of International Affairs · Foggy Bottom
Well into its fifth year of all-out war, Ukraine has faced unexpectedly tense relations with some of its neighbors, potentially jeopardizing Ukraine's EU aspirations, despite strong shared interests in resisting Russian aggression. The Petrach Program on Ukraine is thus launching a series of discussions on developments between Ukraine and its neighbors. This first event in the series focuses on Hungary, where Kyiv's longtime nemesis and Putin ally, Viktor Orban, was recently ousted. Moderated by a leading scholar of Eastern European politics, three specialists on Hungary and Ukraine will examine what has changed in Hungary and what has not, assess a recent Ukrainian law on education and language that Hungary has demanded for Ukraine's ethnic Hungarian population, and consider whether a full reconciliation between the two countries is now possible.
