Great Masters: Georgy Sviridov & Dmitri Shostakovich
Fri, Dec 4 · 7:30 PM La Maison Française · Georgetown
The Russian Chamber Art Society concludes its twentieth anniversary season with a special concert dedicated to the works of teacher and student, Georgy Sviridov and Dmitri Shostakovich. Both composers dedicated their lives to exploring Russian poetry through music, creating profound and evocative pieces. The program highlights Sviridov’s "Petersburg," a vocal poem based on verses by Alexander Blok, which captures a city of mystery and premonition with striking intensity. Shostakovich's contributions include songs and his powerful Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67, a poignant work written in memory of a close friend, known for its haunting cello lament and energetic finale. Performers for the evening include baritone Timothy Mix, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wor, pianists Vera Danchenko-Stern and Alexander Shtarkman, violinist Martin Beaver, cellist Suren Bagratuni, and narrator Adrienne Nelson. Your admission includes the performance and a post-concert reception, where you can enjoy wine, light hors d’oeuvres, and desserts. Please note that each attendee must have a ticket registered in their name and a matching government-issued ID for entry. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and security screenings will be in place. Prohibited items include large bags, backpacks, and outside food/liquids. There is no on-site parking, but metered street parking and garage parking at Georgetown are available nearby. Tickets are $25.
