Nerd Nite Takoma: October Edition

Sat, Oct 24 · 6:00 PM People’s Book

It’s time to get nerdy! Welcome to Nerd Nite Takoma. What to expect? Three experts. Cold beer. A patio full of former prodigies who love binge watching the Discovery Channel. Afterall, we all know learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends. Nerd Nite has been around for over 20 years but Nerd Nite: Takoma is just a baby! Come help us learn to walk. *********************************************** DOORS 5:30PM; SHOW 6PM | All Ages (but note the topic… beer will be served to 21+) Talks are 12 minutes with time for two follow up questions from the audience. The show is held outdoors on People’s Book patio. In case of rain we will move inside. Tables are first come first served with optional standing room. Accessible seating is available. *********************************************** Presentation 1: Even Copernicus Was a Fed: Tales of the Most Famous Government Worker to Ever Wield a Trig Table Description: Ever have a nightmare boss, a job with constant travel and bad per diem, or a policy proposal that went through years of revisions only for your principals committee to completely ignore it? Nicholas Copernicus knows how you feel! Over four decades of government service, he experienced all of that and had to defend one of his castles against invading crusader knights – yet he still found time to displace Earth from the center of the cosmos and invent the modern solar system. Nerd: Karl (he/him/his) is a historian of science and former fed who has traveled around Poland sampling Copernicus-branded beer and chocolate as part of research for a biography of his favorite government nerd. *********************************************** Presentation 2: If Your Eyes Could Speak: Audio Description Description: Can you see by listening? People who are blind do it all the time and enjoy film, video, performing arts and museums! Audio description makes the arts more meaningfully accessible to people who cannot see. Nerd: Joel (he/him/his) is a fifty-y…

Welcome to AskAlice

Hi, I'm Alice.

I go out a lot around DC, Virginia and Maryland, and I got tired of losing hours to Instagram Stories and a dozen venue calendars just to find out what was happening. So I built this to do that watching for me — real, confirmed events pulled from hundreds of sources, sorted so you can find your night instead of hunting for it.
