Book Launch: Transitional Shakespeare, Gender and Adaption
Tue, Nov 17 · 4:00 PM Duques Hall · Foggy Bottom
Room 361. Join us for a book launch celebrating Professor of English Alexa Alice Joubin's new book, Transitional Shakespeare, Gender, and Adaption. About the Book The cross-gender role is a staple of Shakespeare’s plays, and drama is a transitional art. Gender is made flesh and brought into being by actors’ embodiment. Similarly, adaptations also operate transitionally. Some adaptations translate narratives into hospitable forms of expression. Other adaptations function as minor uses of established genres and gender categories. In Transitional Shakespeare, Gender, and Adaption, Professor Alexa Alice Joubin, PhD, theorizes “transness” in a number of modes, including composite figures in drama that arise from the convergence of a character, their curated self-image, and actors’ performance; cultural translation; stagecraft onscreen; and drama as processes of social assemblage. Joubin close-reads a number of films, such as Stage Beauty (2004), As We Like It (Taiwan, 2001), The King and the Clown ( South Korea, 2005), She’s the Man (2006) and Shakespeare in Love (1998). RSVP online >> This event is co-sponsored by the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program and the Department of English.
