MY OMAHA: A Film About Race, Family & a Divided America
Thu, Oct 29 · 7:15 PM Cinema Arts Theatres
Dive into a powerful story exploring race, family ties, and what’s really dividing America today. Free but registration required. Set in Omaha, Nebraska — where the legacies of Malcolm X, racial segregation, and political division still shape everyday life — My Omaha follows filmmaker Nick Beaulieu as he documents his city’s racial justice movement while attempting to reconnect with his terminally ill father Randy, a staunch Trump supporter. As activist Leo Louis II draws Nick deeper into North Omaha’s struggle and resilience, the film becomes an intimate portrait of family, race, and the uneasy search for truth inside modern America. Why come together now? We are living through a time of enormous division. Political disagreements are straining friendships, separating families, and challenging our sense of community. MY OMAHA invites us to look more closely at racial injustice, question what we think we know, and consider how we move forward together. And just five days after this screening, Virginians will head to the polls for the November 3 midterm elections. In addition to choosing their representatives, Virginia voters will decide on three proposed constitutional amendments addressing reproductive freedom, marriage equality, and voting rights. We'll have voter information and educational materials available at check-in to help you understand what's on the ballot, where and how to vote, and what these proposed amendments would mean for Virginia. Whether you already know how you plan to vote, still have questions, or simply want to see a remarkable film, you are welcome. Come with an open mind, bring a friend, and be part of a community that cares about our shared future.
