Brady Art Gallery Tour: Unfossilizing African Art and Cracks & Reforms
Fri, Oct 9 · 1:00 PM Flagg Building · Foggy Bottom
Take a student-led tour of the exhibitions currently on view at the Brady Art Gallery: "Unfossilizing African Art" and "Cracks and Reforms". Unfossilizing African Art recontextualizes African material culture objects that have been held in the GW Collection for nearly 50 years. Led by Assistant Professor Clement Akpang, 59 students across four seminar courses conducted original research to deepen understanding of the collection and reconsider how these objects are interpreted and exhibited. Cracks & Reforms: The 1920s Through the GW Collection examines a decade shaped by political upheaval, social transformation, migration, modernization, and cultural redefinition. This exhibition, developed as part of an art history class taught by Associate Professor Bibi Obler, is accompanied by a catalog designed by graphic design students.
