The Poet Speaks: Screening and Panel

Thu, Nov 19 · 7:00 PM Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market

Get a first look at The Poet Speaks, followed by a discussion featuring Amanda Eke and Free Minds poets. Join Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop for a special advance screening of “Verses from the Inside,” an episode from The Poet Speaks Season 2: We Speak What Was , ahead of its broadcast premiere on PBS and Heritage Broadcasting. A conversation follows the screening with Free Minds poets and host Amanda Eke. About the Episode Episode 2, “Verses from the Inside,” follows host Amanda Eke inside a Washington, D.C. correctional facility, where poetry becomes a lifeline, a way to process, reflect, and reclaim a voice in a place designed to take so much of that voice away. The episode then follows Free Minds poets who have carried that practice beyond incarceration and into their lives as artists and advocates. From inside the walls to life beyond them, Verses from the Inside asks what poetry can make possible when words become a means of survival, connection, and transformation. About the Series The Poet Speaks is a documentary-style series hosted by Amanda Eke that explores the power of poetry as a cultural and historical force. Season 2, We Speak What Was , is a six-episode journey through Washington, D.C., where poetry, music, memory, history, and community collide. Support Free Minds This event is free and open to all. A donation alone does not reserve a seat. To attend and support Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop, select both a free admission ticket and an optional donation.

Welcome to AskAlice

Hi, I'm Alice.

I go out a lot around DC, Virginia and Maryland, and I got tired of losing hours to Instagram Stories and a dozen venue calendars just to find out what was happening. So I built this to do that watching for me — real, confirmed events pulled from hundreds of sources, sorted so you can find your night instead of hunting for it.
