Join us for a fireside chat with Taiwan's Research Institute for Democracy, Society, and Emerging Technology (DSET), including DSET CEO Jeremy Chang and policy analyst Nathanael Cheng (MASIA '22). The session will be moderated by Professor Evan Medeiros. The Research Institute for Democracy, Society, and Emerging Technology (DSET) is a national think tank based in Taipei, founded by Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council in 2023. DSET focuses on policy research at the intersection of geopolitics, technology, and Taiwan's resilience and security. DSET's Economic Security team produces cutting edge research on semiconductors, physical AI, export controls, and technology supply chains. Dr. Jeremy Chih-Cheng Chang is the CEO and Director of Economic Security Research at DSET. His expertise covers safeguarding critical national technologies, including export control, foreign investment, trade secrets, security clearance, and compliance policies. He also addresses tech and industrial policy issues related to economic security and the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain in the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan. He previously spent 15 years in Japan, working at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, the Japan Science and Technology Agency, and as an Assistant Professor at Kyoto University. He conducted post-doctoral research at Harvard University. He earned his Ph.D. in Law from Kyoto University and his LLM degree from Cornell Law School. Nathanael Cheng (MASIA '22) is an economic security policy analyst at DSET, where he specializes in economic security, physical AI, robotics, and semiconductors. He has conducted extensive on-the-ground research into Taiwan's robotics industry. He previously served at the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration working on emerging technology standards issues.
