Virginia helped shape the beginnings of our nation, and local audiences can experience the drama, humor and music behind America’s founding in 1776, the Tony Award-winning musical presented by The Pickwick Players. Just in time for America’s 250th anniversary, 1776 takes audiences inside the Continental Congress, where John Adams pushes for independence, Benjamin Franklin brings his wit and wisdom, and Virginia’s own Thomas Jefferson is called upon to put the revolutionary cause into words. The story also features Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, whose resolution calling for independence helped move the colonies toward a historic decision. What happens when a room full of passionate, stubborn and politically divided men try to agree on the future of a nation? There’s plenty of debate, a little scheming, larger-than-life personalities and some unforgettable music. With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, 1776 combines clever dialogue, colorful characters, political maneuvering and a memorable score. From the spirited opening number, “Sit Down, John,” to the lively “The Lees of Old Virginia” and the stirring “Is Anybody There?,” the music captures the humor, frustrations and high stakes behind the beginnings of a nation. Forget the dusty history books. 1776 presents the founding fathers as real people, with big egos, strong opinions, competing interests and a monumental decision to make. Whether you love musical theatre, American history or simply a great story, this production offers an entertaining way to celebrate 250 years of independence right here in the state that helped make it happen. Join The Pickwick Players for a memorable theatrical experience close to home.
